San Francesco del Deserto

Clad with cypress trees, the small island of San Francesco del Deserto lies between Burano and Sant'Erasmo. Saint Francis landed here in 1220 on his way back from visiting the Holy Land and founded a hermitage.
The island was later given to the Franciscan Order to build a convent, which is still occupied by small body of monks. |
