Founded in 1594, the Scuola dei Carmini was raised to the status of grande in 1767, which makes it the youngest of the city's seven scuole grandi.
The scuola was placed under the patronage of the Carmelite Order and work began on the building in 1627. Its design has been attributed to Baldassare Longhena. The walls of the rather plain chapel on the ground floor are lined with paintings in grisaille, the work of Niccolo Bambini. An elaborate double staircase leads to the sumptuously ornate Salone Superiore, the ceiling of which is decorated with nine beautiful paintings (1739-49) by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, some of the artist's finest works. |
