Mazzorbo
Mazzorbo, which lies in the northern part of the lagoon, is a much more tranquil island than its much-frequented neighbour Burano, to which it is attached by a long, wooden footbridge. Mazzorbo, which was one of the first islands to be settled, was once a prosperous place with five parishes. Today, the island is a quiet and peaceful backwater.
There were originally ten religious buildings on the island, today there is only one, that of the church of Santa Caterina. A fifteenth century campanile survives from the lost church of Santa Maria in Valverde. On the east side of the island is an interesting housing project (1985) by Giancarlo de Carlo. |
