Ponte della Costituzione
Map.
The Ponte della Costituzione, which was the fourth bride to be built over the Grand Canal, is known locally as the Ponte della Calatrava.
The bridge was designed by the Spanish architect, Santiago Calatrava, and opened on September 11th, 2008. As the year marked the sixtieth anniversary of the Italian constitution, the then Mayor of Venice, Massimo Cacciari, suggested that it be named the Ponte della Costituzione. The design was greeted with howls of protest from Venetians, who questioned both the cost and the need for a fourth bridge across the Grand Canal. Proponents of the bridge argued that it would provide a quicker link between the bus station, in Piazzale Roma, and the railway station. |
