Murano: San Pietro Martire
The monastic church of San Pietro Martire was built between 1363 and 1413, on the strength of a legacy from Marco Michiel. The church, which belonged to the Dominican order, was rebuilt and enlarged after a fire in 1474. It was consecrated in 1511. Suppressed in 1806, it reopened as a parish church in 1813.
San Pietro Martire is entered through a fine Renaissance portal. The interior takes the form of a broad nave with two aisles. At the east end is a barrel-vaulted chancel. In the right aisle hangs a beautiful painting of the Virgin and Child with Saints (signed and dated, 1488) by Giovanni Bellini. The painting was originally commissioned by Doge Agostino Barbarigo (r. 1486-1501) for the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, where two of his daughters were nuns. The campanile, which is capped with an 'onion' cupola, was built between 1498 and 1502. One side of the convent's cloister survives along with a well-head, dated 1346. |
