S. Canciano
Map.
According to tradition, the first church to be built on this site was founded in the 9th century by refugees from Aquileia. However, the earliest reference to San Canciano (San Canzian, in Venetian) only dates back to 1040. The church is dedicated to Saints Canziano, Canzio and Canzionello, three Christians who were martyred in Aquileia in 304. In Venetian usage the three saints have converged into one, San Canzian.
The church we see today dates back to the 16th century, architect unknown. The neo-classical façade was added at the beginning of the 18th century by Gaspari. Funds were provided by a legacy from Michele Tommasi, whose bust is set above the entrance.
The interior comprises a nave and two side aisles. The square chancel, which is surmounted by an octagonal drum and cupola, is flanked by two chapels.
