La Maddalena
Map
The church of La Maddalena, which was designed by Tommaso Temanza, is one of the best examples in Venice of neo-classical architecture. Modelled on the Pantheon, the church was begun in 1760. Temanza died in 1789 before the work was completed and the finishing touches were put in place by his pupil, Gianantonio Selva. The interior has an hexagonal ground plan with four side chapels and a presbytery.
Above the portal is an image of an eye enclosed in an interlocking circle and triangle (masonic symbols?). Beneath the image are the words Sapientia Aedificavit Sibi Domum (Wisdom hath builded her house), a quotation from the Old Testament (Proverbs 9).
Tommaso Temanza is interred in the church.
